Key objectives
Founded in 1945 as a workshop for the repair of mopeds and motorcycles, Mandelli S.p.A. has grown over the decades into a leading name in the wholesale distribution of products for the bicycle and motorcycle sector. Objectives:
- manage a very high number of SKUs
- combine pallet storage with picking operations
- improve warehouse organisation
- optimise operational flows
- ensure fast access to products
Technical requirements and constraints
In an environment defined by a wide SKU mix, seasonal demand and the need to handle pallet storage and picking side by side, the logistics system has to deliver accessibility, order and operational continuity.
- handling of products that vary widely in size and type
- the need to combine pallet storage with manual picking
- organisation across multiple operating levels
- use of different equipment for handling and order picking
- varying levels of accessibility between areas and levels
Our solution
Key features
1. Narrow-Aisle pallet racking for bicycle storage
Modulblok designed a pallet racking system served by three-way (trilateral) trucks, configured to store around 3,000 bicycles, handled both in dedicated stillages and manually.

2. A configuration built around the product
To meet the specific storage requirements of bicycles, a dedicated support system was developed: a bike hanger derived from a standard hook fitted with an omega-profile flange.
This solution makes it possible to:
- hold the bicycles securely in position
- slide them freely along the structure
- adapt the configuration to different product sizes

2. A multi-tier warehouse designed around operations
- The warehouse was built as a multi-tier structure with 3 walkway levels, configured to support day-to-day operations and manual order picking.
- The system is designed to handle both manual movements and movements using dedicated stillages, ensuring operational continuity and the flexibility to meet the specific requirements of the product.

Key benefits
Space optimisation and vertical development
Around 3,000 bicycles stored on a three-tier multi-tier structure, making efficient use of the available height.
A configuration tailored to the product
A system with dedicated bike hangers that allows flexible positioning and movement according to product size.
Optimised operational flows
Reach trucks and order pickers are used in combination, so that storage and picking operations can be managed separately.
Operational efficiency in picking flows
A multi-tier layout that supports direct access and manual handling of operations.

Warehouse Engineering is the Modulblok magazine dedicated to the industrial culture of contemporary intralogistics — an editorial space created to read and interpret the changes now reshaping warehouse systems. Through technical content, scenario analysis and expert contributions, the magazine examines the technologies, operating models and skills that are redefining the role of logistics in industrial and distribution processes. The aim is to offer a structured way of reading these developments, one that connects technological change with the design of the systems themselves.
